Can strategy games really work by touch?

For a long time I assumed deep strategy needed a mouse. Dozens of units, tiny menus, precise clicks — none of that sounds like a phone. Then I played enough well-designed mobile strategy games to admit I was wrong.

The trick is designing for the finger, not porting a PC interface. Iron Meridian does this well: a readable hex grid, everything two taps away, and a pace that never demands split-second input. It asks for planning, which touch handles perfectly fine.

Where touch strategy still struggles is information density. Some games cram too much onto a small screen and you end up pinching and zooming constantly. The good ones hide complexity behind clean menus instead of showing it all at once.

So yes, strategy works on phones now — but only when the designers treat the touchscreen as the main platform rather than an afterthought. When they do, a long campaign on your phone can be just as satisfying as one on a desk.
