Hand-drawn art is quietly carrying mobile games
Some of the most memorable mobile games I've played this year aren't the most technically impressive — they're the best-looking in a simpler sense. A strong, consistent art style does more for a small game than flashy effects ever could.
Hollow Tide is my favourite recent example. It's a quiet adventure carried almost entirely by its hand-drawn flooded town. Every scene feels like a painting you want to sit inside, and that atmosphere is the actual gameplay.
Even a casual game benefits. Legends of Slots gets a lot of mileage out of clean, readable symbol art — nothing fancy, just confident and distinct. Readability is itself an art decision.
If you're a small developer, this is the encouraging part: you don't need a huge engine or a big team to stand out. A clear visual voice and good readability will outlast most graphical fireworks.
